Care providers aren’t just employees – they are individuals you bring into your home and trust with the care you about the most. Therefore, safety should be the top feature in any hiring checklist. We’ve put together a brief checklist below to help you in your hunt for a new care provider:

1. Review our Resources

Our Family Resource Centre provides a range of information and on-line tools to guide you in selecting the appropriate candidate, interviewing them and conducting secure background checks to help you make the safest and absolute best decision for your family.

2. Run Third-Party Reference and Criminal Back Ground Checks

You deserve to know that your caregiver is qualified, safe and reliable. That’s why uCarenet has made it easy for Caregivers to get vetted! Once you are satisfied with your initial search results, ask your Caregiver to provide you the Certn™ background check. Asking for the background check of a potential caregiver can help you keep your home and your family members safe.

To help you have peace of mind, our background checks are done in partnership with Certn™ and they include; Criminal record checks, Employment history and education verifications, and driving records. Learn more about our background check process.

3. Contact References

Before you hire a care provider, check at least three references. Start by puting together a list of questions to ask previous employers — including things that will be relevant to the job you’re hiring for. Here are four reference questions we like to ask:

  1. Caregiver is seeking to work with my parent(s) in their homes. Do you believe they would be a good fit to this kind of work? Why or why not?
  2. How would you describe caregiver's bedside manner?
  3. How would you rate caregiver's ability to empathise with patients, specifically seniors?
  4. How would you rate caregiver's senior care knowledge and comprehension? Do they have any particularly strong or weak areas?

4. Enquire into Health and Substance Abuse

This is a tricky topic to approach and privacy laws can make it difficult to ask such questions. Nevertheless, when you interview your potential Care Provider, see what their feelings are about alcohol and drugs. If you are really concerned, consider requesting that they get a drug test from a hospital before they start. You can ask the Care Provider to provide a letter from their family doctor verifying that they have had a recent physical examination and can perform the tasks of your care provider job. You should also ask their references if they felt that the Care Provider has exhibited problems with timeliness or patience which may be due to alcohol or drug use.
